Position Summary

As an Over-the-Phone Spanish Interpreter, you will deliver professional interpretation services between English and Spanish in real time. This role is ideal for those who have strong language proficiency, cultural understanding, and a passion for helping others through effective communication.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide Real-Time Interpretation:
    • Accurately interpret conversations between English and Spanish speakers over the phone.
    • Use active listening and quick response skills to interpret consecutively or simultaneously as needed.
  2. Maintain Confidentiality and Professionalism:
    • Adhere to confidentiality standards, safeguarding the privacy of all parties.
    • Exhibit cultural sensitivity and professionalism in all interactions, handling various client needs and subject matters.
  3. Ensure Clarity and Neutrality:
    • Ensure accuracy and completeness in interpretation without adding, omitting, or changing meaning.
    • Stay neutral and impartial during all conversations to support clear and unbiased communication.
  4. Adapt to Various Topics and Scenarios:
    • Comfortably interpret topics in fields such as customer service, healthcare, and legal services (no prior field experience required, training provided).
    • Handle a wide range of caller needs, adjusting language and tone for each scenario.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  1. Language Proficiency:
    • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English, with excellent grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
    • Ability to adapt to different Spanish dialects and regional language nuances.
  2. Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
    • Exceptional listening, comprehension, and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to remain calm and handle sensitive or complex calls professionally.
  3. Technical Requirements:
    • Access to a reliable internet connection and a quiet, private workspace.
    • Comfort with basic phone system functions (e.g., mute, hold) and willingness to learn any necessary software.
  4. Professionalism and Ethics:
    • A commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professional ethics.
    • Willingness to uphold a code of ethics in interpreting and sign a confidentiality agreement if required.

Additional Preferences (not required)

  • Experience in volunteer or community interpretation settings (any experience level accepted).
  • Awareness of cultural sensitivities and the role language plays in diverse interactions.
